Do You Hate Reading, or Are You Really in a Reading Drought?

The Best Books for Students: An Essential Reading List for College

According to popular opinion, many people dislike reading. If you are among those many people, have you ever considered that you don’t dislike reading, you’re just in the midst of a reading drought?

What is a reading drought, you may ask? Well, a reading drought is simply a period of time where one cannot read; whether it’s because they are focused on something else and don’t have the time to read, or if it’s because they just can’t bring themselves to read even a word from a book, any long period of time spent away from books, and essentially reading, is considered a reading drought.

So, reflect on yourself: when was the last time you’ve actually read a book? Okay, why haven’t you picked up that book (or a new one) again? Is it because of the burden of school work that you were unable to go back to your book? Is it because you’ve found a new hobby that you enjoy more than reading? Is it because you feel like you’ll be bored even after reading one sentence? If you’ve said ‘yes’ to any of these things, you are indeed in a reading drought.

Now, some of you may say, “I must be in a 5-year reading drought then,” and that is possible. You see, reading droughts are scary; once you stray away from reading, there’s a large possibility of never returning! I’m currently in a reading drought myself, which is why I chose this as my topic for this blog post; I’ve gone about 2 weeks without reading. As I was trying to locate the reason why I’m in my drought, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s because I overwhelmed myself with so many books. I will admit, I am a little selfish when it comes to books; when I have a bunch of books I want to read, I read all of them at the same time. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 books or 10 books, I will read everything at the same time, but in the end I just end up burning myself out. Honestly speaking, I really don’t know when I’ll get back to reading, but I know for sure that it isn’t going to be a drought that goes on for months; what would be the point of this blog if I went on a 5-year reading drought?

How do we get out of the reading drought? Search for the right book; a book that makes you so intrigued, you’d be willing to pull an all nighter just so you can find out what happens. I haven’t found that book yet, but hopefully I will soon. I hope that the rest of you will also find that book as well!
