Who Would Be The Best Harry Potter Boyfriend?

Most, if not all, of the Harry Potter boys are dreamy (even Tom Riddle…the young version of Tom Riddle, that is…), so which one would make the best boyfriend? I will be using both the books and the movies to list the pros and cons of each Hogwarts hottie (I’m so sorry…it had to be either Hogwarts hottie or Hogwarts hunk…), and crown one of them as the best boyfriend!

First up is Harry Potter!

Harry Potter Writer J.K. Rowling Suspects She Had Coronavirus ...

Harry is way too troubled to be in a serious relationship. Most of his childhood was spent in an abusive home, raised by his extremely nosy aunt and grumpy uncle who treated Harry like their personal servant. If you think that’s bad, think again- Voldemort, an evil dark wizard, was after Harry’s life for 17 years. The dark wizard attempted to take Harry’s life as an infant (he failed, obviously), and made it his life’s mission to finish him off once and for all. To make things worse, Harry’s scar, left behind by Voldemort’s attempted murder, pained him frequently due to the horrifying fact that Voldemort and Harry were connected. Now, there may be a lot of sympathy for Harry because of his agonizing past, but get the streamers ready for the pity party- he’s also one of the most awkward characters in the whole series. Around his two buddies, Ron and Hermione, Harry is as cool as can be, but around his classmates? Not so much. He’s even worse when it comes to relationships and dating; Harry couldn’t manage to find a date for the Yule Ball (equivalent of prom) until the very last minute. His poor, last resort date had to endure a painstakingly long night of sitting around, and watching Harry sulk as he observed his crush dance with her date from afar. A year later, our awkward Harry has an opportunity to make a move on his long-time crush, Cho Chang (same crush from the Yule Ball), whose boyfriend (her Yule Ball date) had just died the year before at the hand of Voldemort. Harry, fueled by his burning attraction to Cho (and his raging teenage hormones) leans in to share a horrifying, awkward kiss; Cho, guilt-ridden, was crying the whole time- she felt that she moved on too fast from her recently deceased boyfriend. After Harry’s harrowingly embarrassing past experiences with love, Harry finally gets himself a girlfriend: Ginny Weasley, Ron’s sister. The two hit it off but the relationship came to a sudden halt- Harry wanted to protect Ginny from Voldemort. So, it’s pretty clear that Harry had absolutely no luck with relationships during his school years. Although Harry is a sweet boy and has his heart in the right place (most of the time), I don’t think Harry would make the best boyfriend, he has way too much on his shoulders to maintain a proper relationship. Sorry, Harry, you’re eliminated.

Next, we have Harry’s best friend, Ron Weasley:

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' Should Have Ruined Ron's Marriage

I don’t know what to say about Ron. I love him and I think he would be a great boyfriend based on his character, but at the same time I think he would be better off as just a friend. I know it’s sad to say, but Ron was basically the underdog of his friend group; Harry was the “Chosen One” and Hermione was the brightest witch of her age, while Ron was just…there. Even his place in his family was quite depressing; out of seven children, Ron being the youngest brother, he was always outshined by his older brothers and younger sister. As a result of all this, Ron has a very fragile ego; constant bickering with Hermione and the occasional, but dangerous fights with Harry were the unfortunate effects. Despite Ron’s low self-esteem, he’s hilarious and is an amazing source of dependability for his friends- actually, more for Harry and not Hermione. You see, Ron doesn’t know how to act around girls. It’s evident in the books, and films, that Ron would badmouth and tease Hermione all the time, despite the fact that they were supposed to be good friends. There are excuses made by the fans for Ron being mean to Hermione, and it’s simply because he liked her the whole time! Much like how little boys tease the girls they like, Ron was doing the same. I can definitely see where that’s coming from, but that really says a lot about Ron’s true nature- he can’t mature. It’s cute and all when 11 and 12 year old boys tease the girls they like, but is it cute when 17 and 18 year old guys verbally abuse their crushes? It’s clear that Ron becomes an angel to Hermione when they start acknowledging the fact that they like each other and become an item, but they were still bickering and getting on each other’s nerves. In Deathly Hallows, the trio embarked on a journey to find pieces of Voldemort’s soul in order to destory them, but halfway through the journey Ron leaves. Long story short: Harry, Ron, and Hermione had to take turns wearing the necklace with Voldemort’s soul trapped inside (before they found the sword of Gryffindor to destroy it), but Ron wore it for too long and it started to mess with his head. Not only was the necklace affecting him, but his injured arm- he felt completely helpless- which resulted in a large fight and him leaving the two behind. The thing that surprised me most was when Ron asked Hermione if she was going to follow him, to which she said no, and then he started going off about how he saw them together the other night- accusing his girlfriend and best friend of doing something behind his back! I really don’t want to eliminate Ron because he seems like such a nice guy beneath all his insecurities. I won’t eliminate him for now…

Next up is Draco Malfoy,

Draco Malfoy | Harry Potter Wiki | Fandom

Ah, I had the biggest crush on Draco Malfoy solely because of his appearance. I overlooked his horrible personality and instead drooled over his face…quite a rookie mistake I made. As I’m rereading the Harry Potter books again during quarantine, I am constantly reminded of Draco’s vicious character alongside his incurable habit of bullying: he’s racist, sexist, and generally a horrible person. Although, I do give him credit for realizing how horrible he was and attempting to fix himself at the end of the series, but he was still a bad person throughout majority of the books. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the suffering one would go through to be his girlfriend. He’s very good looking, though. Draco Malfoy is eliminated.

Next up is my favorite, Neville Longbottom:

Neville Longbottom (Scopatore) | Harry Potter Fanon Wiki | Fandom

I award the best glow-up of the century to Mr. Neville Longbottom. Okay, besides physical appearance, Neville is such a sweetie and so cute AH. But in all seriousness, Neville is so underrated; despite all the bullying he received from schoolmates and even his own family (they all thought he would be a Squib. Squib = worst status possible in the wizarding world), he grew up to be one of the best wizards of his age. I can’t help but think of that one scene in Goblet of Fire when Neville comes back from the Yule Ball, so drunk on the adrenaline of the night, he’s absolutely dazed and danced around the dormitory while Harry wakes up from his sleep and he’s like ??? Neville is so innocent and sweet, and although he has had a rough past, he grew from it and became bolder and stronger. Can we talk about how he acts around girls? He’s the epitome of sugar: so sweet! He’s ultimately shy around the opposite gender, but he treats his female classmates with respect and kindness and I think that’s all a girl ever wants from a guy at the end of the day. At least for me that’s all I want. Let’s talk about his character growth as well: Neville went from being the resident scaredy-cat to the brave warrior who was the first to charge at Voldemort and his army. He went from being the shy nerdy coward, to the brave nerdy hottie. I have to attach a photo of his glow-up, so we can all admire this beautiful man- you’re welcome for blessing your eyes! Neville is not eliminated.

This is an old photo (my favorite photo of him), but he still looks this good to this day!

Next up is Cedric Diggory,

Cedric Diggory. Hufflepuff pride! | Cedric diggory, Harry potter ...

I know I used “official” photos for the other guys (this is a screencap from the Goblet of Fire movie for anyone who didn’t know), but Cedric’s smile is my weakness so this is going to be his photo. Well, let’s see, Cedric is athletic, intelligent, good looking, and possibly the kindest person ever: he’s the perfect boyfriend. I’m currently rereading the Goblet of Fire right now, and just reading about Cedric makes me blush, but watching Cedric Diggory come alive in the film “hits different” as people say these days. Let’s cut to the chase, I am in love with Cedric Diggory and he would, no doubt, make an amazing boyfriend. *SPOILER ALERT* However, we have to be practical here, Cedric is ultimately murdered by Wormtail at the end of GoF, therefore he is eliminated. I did not want to take these drastic measures, but I have to be fair and be practical. I’ll just attach a couple more photos of Cedric, because why not? And also because I prefer Robert Pattinson as Cedric ANYDAY over Edward. I know Robert Pattinson feels the same way too.

Our very last contestants are Fred and George Weasley,

24 Mischievous Facts About Fred and George Weasley
Fred on left, George on right

To be honest, I’ve always preferred George over Fred. Maybe it’s because he’s the “underrated” twin, but I always thought that George was a lot more logical and responsible compared to his twin. Fred always pulled the crazy pranks and jokes without thinking about the consequences, for example, in GoF when Mr. Weasley, Ron, George, and Fred arrive at the Dursley’s to pick up Harry for the Quidditch World Cup (and for the rest of summer vacation at the Weasley’s) Fred purposely dropped all of his magical toffees, knowing that Dudley (Harry’s cousin) was on an extreme diet for his extreme case of obesity, and proceeded to pick them up and stuff them in his pockets all except for one. Dudley, itching for sweets at this point of his gruesome diet, immediately stuffed the remaining toffee in his mouth and all at once his tongue became 4 feet long- a result of consuming the magically tainted candy. I love Fred, but he’s way too immature; I understand that he’s supposed to be a prankster, but so is George and he knows when to stop. Despite Dudley bullying Harry for years, Dudley shows signs of trauma whenever there is any mention of magic- thanks to the pig tail Hagrid gave him at age 11- so that was quite a harsh move from Fred’s side. Along with that, the note that film Fred passes to Ron and Harry in the GoF film really irks me- it was about the Yule Ball, before the boys had any dates, and the note read “Get a move on, or all the good ones will have gone.” Good ones? Way to be a gentleman, Fred. George, on the other hand, is balanced between his jokester ways and being a good person. For example, in Chamber of Secrets when it was discovered that Gilderoy Lockhart, a charming wizard known for his fascinating books and good looks, would be Hogwart’s new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Fred teased his mother endlessly about it (she was a huge fan of Gilderoy Lockhart) while George worried about the cost of Lockhart’s expensive books and whether if they could afford the whole lot for all 5 of the Weasley children attending Hogwarts. The Weasleys weren’t exactly financially stable. While Fred made a joke out of it, George took it seriously and was deeply concerned. That’s where I draw the line and say that George is a better person, and therefore would make a better boyfriend. Also, to be practical again, Fred dies in the Battle of Hogwarts so he would have to be eliminated. Fred is eliminated, while George is not.

Okay, so we are down to:

The winner will be chosen based on my personal preferences, but make sure to leave a comment below on who you think would be the best Harry Potter boyfriend!

The winner is:

Neville Longbottom!

Neville Longbottom: That awkward moment when a teen heartthrob ...
Hehe I used a post-glow-up photo.

I personally really like all three of the final contestants, but Neville is so uniquely charming. Not only did he have a physical glow-up, he went from the resident coward to the one being lauded for his bravery. This is a little excerpt from Deathly Hallows that showcases Neville’s sense of courage when Snape becomes Headmaster and Deatheaters take over the school, and Neville explains to the trio about the horrible new regime at Hogwarts:

“Alecto, Amycus’s sister, teaches Muggle Studies, which is compulsory for everyone. We’ve all got to listen to her explain how Muggles are like animals, stupid and dirty, and how they drive wizards into hiding by being vicious toward them, and how the natural order is being reestablished. I got this one ((indicates to a large gash on his cheek)) for asking her how much Muggle blood she and her brother have got.”

Neville is pretty much the perfect Harry Potter boyfriend for me.

Do you agree? Or would you pick someone else? Let me know in the comments below!
